Frequently Asked Questions
What is an earthen building?
Earthen buildings are structures made out of sand, straw, and clay. They are very cheap in material costs, but very high in labor required.
Doesnt a mud house wash away in the rain?
The way you build the foundations and roofs, combined with finish plasters protects the mud walls from rain and wind. A natural house does require more maintenance then a wood framed home, but has many benefits that outweighs the work, to me at least!
What is the average cost per square foot to build an earthen home?
The cost of an earthen home can vary wildly depending on the amout of labor done by the owner, as well as design, size, systems, and finishes. Simple, small homes with active owner builders, and resourceful use of recycled materials can make a home free to build, or a cob palace could cost millions.
